Here is a photo record of my visit to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is located at Tempozan Harbor Village. To get there, I took the Osaka subway Chuo Line to Osakako station. From Osakako station, its a 5 minute walk to the aquarium.

The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan was opened on July 20, 1990 and occupies an area of approximately 3,900 meter square. The main structure is 8 stories of Reinforced steel concrete up to a height of 50m.

Normal Operating hours for the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is 10am to 8pm. The ticket counter is closed an hour before the closing time.

The aquarium is closed for 7 days in 2008 (in June and in winter):
January 15 (Tue.), January 16 (Wed.), January 17 (Thr.), February 20 (Wed.), February 21, 2007 (Thr.), June 25 and June 26.

The opening hours are lengthened during the Japanese Summer vacation and during the Japanese Golden week holidays.

The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the largest in the world. Its main exhibit tank holds approximately 11,000 tonnes of sea water.

Thats the Tempozan Marketplace where there are shops, restaurants, and amuement outlets. The big wheel is the Tempozan Giant Wheel.....one of the largest in the world giving great views of Osaka Bay and the city of Osaka.

There is a Guided Tour at Osaka Aquarium but u have to book 2 days in advance and it is in Japanese.

During the 75-min. tour you are guided, via wireless earphone, around the Kaiyukan including its operational areas on the 8th floor. Along with behind-the-scenes operations and basics in ecology, in Japanese, a Marine Mate explains how the creatures live in the Kaiyukan in each place and how staff members establish relationships with them.

The above concepts of Kaiyukan follow a part of Gaia Hypothesis advocated by Dr.James Lovelock. This hypothesis includes "a theory of the Earth as a living organism - where the evolution of the species and their material environment are tightly coupled but still evolve by natural selection.

Working under the theme of the Gaia Hypothesis, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan faithfully recreates the Pacific Rim volcanic belt and the corresponding Pacific Rim life belt. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan takes u on a journey around the Pacific to experience the mystery of life and the significance of our natural environment.
