How to train yr Seahorses to feed from dish

Seahorses are very smart creatures. Training them to feed from dish normally takes abt 1-2mths. (like toilet training yr dogs) I always believe they are almost as smart as a dog bowdown.gif

1) To start, u got to get them to just feed. We will start with live brine shrimp or better live mysis.

2) After they are feeding well, mix half live food & half frozen mysis. This will take sometime before they will even start to take the frozen mysis. Once they start the first frozen ms, Bingo! go to next step

3) Slowly reduce the ratio of the live & frozen food to the horses

4) Once they are 100% ready, feeding on frozen ms, time to teach them to feed from dish. Yes, dish!

What u need. A pair of disposable wooden chopsticks, a glass or plastic dish or ash tray & a transparent pvc pipe or tube.

Secure the chopstick to the top of the dish. This is for the seahorses to "hook themselves up" to feed.

5) Place the dish into the tank, best with some plants ard the dish. Let the mysis slowly sink through the clear tube into the dish. The seahorses will see the mysis slowly sink into the dish. Most of the case, they will be attracted to it but won't feed from dish during the first attempt. After 15min, no response from the seahorses, just stir up & let them chase & feed as per normal.

Continue doing step 5 till they feed from dish. Once 1 seahorse start to feed from dish, soon the rest will follow. Future training of new seahorses introduced to the tank will be taken over by the old birds. Monkey see monkey do.

Do not be surprise that soon, the pipefishes, mandarins & other inhabitants will feed from dish too. Have fun!!!

Cheers!
