I was suffering from quite a bout of red slime algae in my tank...

Reading the forums and realising that it was a bacteria rather than algae, i dug out my old anti-biotics (Yes yes.... pls do not slate me for creating resistant strains... Either i eat it all or i do not eat at all...).

Opened a capsule in a syringe of seawater and sprayed the red slime algae affected area..

Day 1: Tremendous improvement in as the number of bubbles on my affected red slime areas were less but nontheless, still there.

Day2: waited for 24 hrs before administrating 2nd dose.... Next time, red slime algae was totally gone!

Everything else seems fine but from wavery red slime trails to nothing at all seems to be a dramatic improvement... Skimmers were on for the entire treatment...

Just wanted to share a new (contravesal?) way to combat red slime... Intended to do a 3 day course but after 2 days everything seems fine... will monitor and update the situation

Wow! Interesting! Must applaud you for the courage in doing it... 35.gif 35.gif 35.gif 35.gif

I would have freaked out if it was my tank... Anyway, which anti-biotic did you use and what dosage??

I was using ospexin... i think it's quite strong at 250 mg... once a day after lights out so as not to stress the corals and fish too much

Haha... i even sprayed a little on my sunnies as there were red slime trails flowing above.. sunnies seem fine and the red slime gone...

Only afraid it affects my beneficial bacterial but i guess there's no other way to get rid of red slime quickly

You could have used the Anti-Red by AquaMedic... smile.gif

But it seems you're doing fine... did the skimmer go berserk? Normally when you dose such medications, the skimmer would skim like hell...

Did you get a chance to monitor the pH of the tank??

I didn't know which strain to use but since red slime is a bacteria, antibiotics are very useful in destroying bacteria. So i picked up the anti-biotics which was given to me when i was most sick but stubbon in not creating resistant strain period...

It seems that now the red slime is totally gone and my skimmate runs on dry as it always overloads when on wet.. (Red seae prizm)

it's been the 4th day and i see the growth of green algae... looks like time to change water...

Open the capsule in a cup, put in sea water, stir like mad... let it sit... put more sea water and stir somemore, than inject with syringe on infected areas..

I think you can put the whole capsule in but it takes longer to dissolve..

If i'm not mistaken, its gram positive bacteria... cyanobacteria isn't an algae but is actually bacteria. Common anti-biotics works against them. Most of the other nitrifying, aerobic bacteria are gram-negative. So there is no immediate bad effect on them.

greens could come about from the added nutrient load... you should continue to skim aggressively.
