i belive most of the sps do need strong flow but definitely not a laminar flow.

I believe laminar flow is those type of flow that is coming out of the output of a powerhead.... narrow type one...... not tunze type of flow,......

Actually, studies have shown that corals grow faster under laminar flow, and most commercial coral growers use laminar flow.

hur? i tot the article is about using Gryes setup to maximize water movement in a tank....unless i am mistaken, it does not really mention (nor is it a study) that coral grows faster under laminar flow????

You're right, it doesn't directly say it, but it implies that corals do grow faster under laminar flow.

Directly from the article:

"By encouraging the formation of one or more gyres, aquarists are capable of producing more water movement in terms of overall water flow speed. Since higher flow speeds produce greater amounts of turbulence, this translates into increased gas exchange and higher rates of photosynthesis and respiration."

I believe what angmo means is that the flow should not be in a uni-directional flow-path towards the coral... while SPS loves flow, constant direct flow would cause the tissue to be torn off resulting in the bare skeleton of the coral being exposed and algae being able to grow at the tips.

The gyre method provides strong flow which is not directed at the coral directly and it might provide more turbulence which benefits the corals' growth.

Yes, if that's the case, do not provide them direct flow.

Cheers
