Hi,

wanna ask if my lighting of 250w of BLV 20kk bulb powered by eballast supplement with 1 x 24w aquablue special and 1 x 24 w blue plus powered by tridonic is enough for general SPS.

Generally, i love the colour of this combi but was skeptical of the PAR from a BLV 20kk bulb after reading sanjay's report. Currently i am using a BLV 14kk bulb, however even with the supplement, i feel it is too yellow to my own preference.
i do not want growth but i wanna to hold the colour of the SPS.

Recent happening:
Recently just upgraded my FR to a deltec 509 and dump 1 litres of ROWAphos and somehow i think this causes my pink milli to STN from bottom but the rest look fine. pH drop quite a bit.

And recently i feel that my coral ( SPS and ric florida) are looking a bit pale ... And it look even more pale under 14kk , that is why i have this idea to make my tank a bit more blue, a bit more viewing pleasure.

started dosing Kent Marine tech I and Tropic Marine K= and A-

tank parameter:
2 feet cube tank.
Calcium: 460ppm
Mag:1380ppm
kH: 8.6
pH:8.2 - 8.5
temp:25.7 degree C.
ANN: undetachable ; nitrate at about 2.5ppm
phosphate: not measure as i do not trust my salifert testkit.

All measurement from salifert except pH and temp from pinpoint.
your discussions are very much appreciated.

There could be many causes for the pink milli to die... any description of what went wrong?

As for the rics and SPS colours, do you dose iodine?

BLK 14K is a bit yellow, you can try reeflux 12k or hamiton 14k with 2 x T5 blus plus. If possible, add another 2 x T5 actinic to you set up will be better if you still have space.

Have you check your NO3 level and what about your flowrate? 2.5ppm might not be good enough to colour up your sps.

Just some of my input, hope it will help.

What is the water depth of your 2 ft cube? If you are running bare bottom and have very low nutrient, then a 250W BLV 20K is good for 2 ft deep of water. You can consider adding Amino Acid.

Did you rinse your Rowa properly in RO/DI water before using. Although the instruction states that no rinsing is required, the very fine rust particles can have some effect on SPS especially you loaded 1 L of it at one go.

250W BLV 14K is very yellow and very high PAR. Since you using only 2x24W T5, you will not be able to balance the yellowish tinge. But the 250W BLV 20K might not do well for your tank if you are keeping SPS and the PAR is kinda low.

Suggest you go for either the Reeflux 12K or the Hamilton 14K. I'm using Hamilton (bulbs almost a year old at 8hour a day photoperiod) and I find it pretty pleasing. Of course I do balance with 3 ATI blue Plus and 1 ATI aquablue special.

However lights are only one part of the equation for SPS......so gotta keep a lookout for the rest of the parameters.
Francis
