Was going through this thread in RC:
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...p;pagenumber=34

3 days without lights seems to be very effective to combat cyno.

Hmm a hard one.But look at Singapore's weather during December. How many days in a week sometimes we have rain??Sometimes a whole week it rains.I guess it's natures way to combat algae.Indonesia is also the same.So i guess it's okay too. happy.gif

um, the last time it rained for weeks on end, much alage and cyano developed shortly from the die-off of the fauna due to excessive dilution of surrounding waters. blink.gif These algae remained for months after.

yes i tried it b4 n it does get rid of cyano but sps didnt like it at all . Clams ok but a couple of brown spots appeared over the blue... overall i think for those with light lovng creatures , its best to just do it for 1 or 2 days instead of the 3 days duration. Also best to get to the root of the prob taht caused the algae /cyano boom , wh in my case is excessive feeding.

From what I read, it seems like for SPS max is 2 days.
Anything more than that will cause bleaching. Also the lights after the black out must be gradual in order not to stress the SPS.

quite an interesting method. I'm wondering if any of you who tried it, checked ur No3 and PO4 prior to the 2-3 days of light soff.

trying to hypothesize on the reason why it goes away. Its only Cyano rt? not green algae? thnx

ya... the cyno will go way but not green algae. 3 days off light will only weaken the green algae. beside that, even if 3 days light off, i got to do some clean up... e.g. water change etc. if not, the root problem will surface again after sometime.
