https://www.reefcheck.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/tankers.jpg400266New data collected by Reef Check show that urchin removal efforts at Tankers Reef off the coast of Monterey has resulted in the significant growth of giant kelp. Purple urchin densities dropped from over 800 urchins per 100 square meters in April 2021 to less than 100 urchins per 100 square meters by June 2022, while the density of giant kelp increased roughly five fold from April 2021 to September 2022.
